How many times is ‘Live For Ever’ mentioned in the bible?

How many times is ‘live for ever’ mentioned in the bible?

In earlier posts I explained where the concept of living for ever came from.

How many times is ‘live for ever’ mentioned in the bible? That really depends upon what bible translation we’re reading. In a search throughout the King James translation of the bible the words ’live for ever’ come up 28 times but only around 19 of these apply to living forever and around 7 of these occasions were royal greetings. That leaves 12 other occasions where the words ‘live for ever’ are mentioned.

The first time

The first time the words, ‘live for ever’ are mentioned is in the third chapter of the bible.

And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

And the Lord God commanded the man.

In the previous chapter God had commanded Adam not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God was clear enough about it, he said, ‘If you don’t do as I tell you, you will die.’

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Some bible commentators say that Adam was given a choice but what I read is that God ‘commanded’ Adam not to eat of the tree. A command is like an order and not a choice as far as I’m concerned.
It follows  from the above scripture that if we do as God tells us to, we may live for ever and if we don’t, we’ll die.

Young’s literal bible

Young’s Literal bible translates the same verses as follows,

And Jehovah God layeth a charge on the man, saying, `Of every tree of the garden eating thou dost eat; and of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou dost not eat of it, for in the day of thine eating of it — dying thou dost die.’

According to scripture some will die twice. However those who overcome won’t die twice. Twice? Yes twice.

1599 Geneva Bible

Once more the same scripture verses, this time from the 1599 Geneva Bible (GNV),

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Thou shalt eat freely of every tree of the garden, But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt die the death.

Stay in God’s good books

What does it mean ‘to die the death?’ In the book of Revelation we’re told about the second death.

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

In the first book of the bible, in the second chapter of the book of Genesis, we’re told  that those who disobey God will ‘die the death.’ And in the last book of the bible, in the second chapter of the book of Revelation, we are told that he that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

We have to make sure that we are in God’s good books if we want to avoid the second death and live for ever.

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

  1. Yes Mimi it is True if we continue to sin without heart repentance we will Die because sin eats away all the goodness in us , that is why Jesus had to redeem us and set us free from the slavery of sin so we could be Born Again and no longer to die or sin , we will be perfected in Love and Love can do no evil, God is Love.

Thank you for your feedback Anne. Wow, you’re steaming way ahead. As you can see I am just going through the steps of listing where in the bible the words ‘live for ever’ are mentioned. The idea is that a picture will emerge of what has been said about living for ever. Just scripture; ‘Sola Scriptura,’ without anyone interpreting anything in particular. Just a step at a time discovering what God and his Son have to say about living for ever.

And yes, God sure is love, and ‘whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him: 1 John 2:5. And this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous: 1 John 5:3’.

The first time in scripture that ‘live for ever’ is mentioned is when God takes this blessing (ability to live for ever) away from man due to them not following God’s command.

    God bless,

  3. Thank you for for sharing Mimi with me over the last few weeks both on our Blogs and also by Phone, it’s helpful to know your focus,

I thought I would also share some more very important Truths concerning Salvation, there is a lot of detail so I will just put some of the Scriptures verses that confirms them but not all, if needed let me know.

We are to ask for God’s wisdom without doubting we have it, Proverbs 4:7 – James 1:5-6 – Colossians 2 :2 -3 (KJV) in doing this we can be assured that with the empowering of The Holy Spirit, we can know the Truth as Jesus Teaches us.

1 – God is Love, it is His seed or Nature and Love can do no evil, not ever!

2 – When we were Born, we had Adam’s seed or Nature but we are under God’s grace through the Blood of Christ which covered us, by His foreknowledge, God knows those who are His, He knows all things, like who will come to heart repentance and who won’t and He chooses us according to His foreknowledge, we can’t earn Salvation by doing fleshy works although we will show by His good works we have it, Faith without works is dead.

When we are old enough to know right from wrong, it is our choice when we come to heart repentance, God won’t force us to accept His free gift of Salvation in Christ Jesus and so be conformed into His image but The Spirit does draw us to Him, until we come to our senses and repent and believe, we will reap what we sow .

3 – God tells us when we are Born Again we are set free, we have His seed or Nature which is Love, so we also can do no evil. John8:34-36 1John3:9 Ephesians 4:23-24 -1John 3:1 6-7 (KJV)

4 – He tells us to reckon ourselves dead to sin, not to say we will sin, as a man thinks in his heart so he will do. He also tells us no Temptation will be greater than we can bear, He provides the way of escape when we ask. There is a difference between weaknesses and shortcoming and when we are sinning, we only judge and rebuke sin with God’s Truth not a fleshy agenda.

5 – God tells us to put our flesh to death by the Spirit (Luke 11:13), what is dead can’t cause us to sin. Paul showed the battle he had with his flesh in Romans 7 but than showed us how walk in Victory in… Romans8:12-15 – Romans6 – Colossians3:4-6 – Galatians24 -26 – 2Corinthians7:1 and other Scriptures.(KJV)

6 – God tells us if we say we haven’t sinned and so don’t need Salvation, we are calling Him a liar but if we say we will sin after we have been Born again, we are also calling Him a liar, He tells us we CANNOT sin when we have His seed or Nature, Jesus lives His life in us which means we are perfected in Love and Love does not sin – 1John 3:9 1John 3:6-7 – 1John 4:17-19 -1John 2:4-6 Romans 8:12-15 – Romans 6:5-7 -Daniel 12:10 (KJV) and we are to aim to be perfected, Jesus tells us to seek, ask and knock.

7- Can we loose our Salvation No! not after we have been Born Again and if we are known by God we will be Born again, we were already saved before we are Born but are working out our Salvation meaning doing what God asks us to do so we can be complete by being perfected in His Love, this is not not worldly self centered love. But before we are Born again we are to be on gard against Satan’s temptations to cause us to fall into sin, which we can be forgiven of when we repent, Jesus is our Advocate, we than turn from evil and do good by The Holy Spirits empowering.

8 – The only way we can loose our Salvation is to reject Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and this is Blaspheming The Holy Spirit which is the unforgivable sin, we are calling Him a liar, He shows us Jesus is a reality. But if we are known by God as His, He knows we won’t do this, He knows our heart, this is why He chose us.

9 – How do we know if we are Born Again, The Holy Spirit tells us… How does He do this… Do we Love God, does it hurt us to hear others belittle Him, do we care if others are in darkness, do you seek to help those in need, do we Love unconditionally and Sacrificially, do we NO longer sin …. than we are perfected in Love by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, if we are not but we are seeking to do all these things, we will be. What if we are not, than we are still in darkness.

10 – What is the most important thing for us to do … LOVE GOD AND OTHERS not because we have to but because we won’t to, which confirms we are in Christ Jesus.

Christian Love Always from both of us – Anne.

      Dear Anne,

      About wisdom according to scripture.

In response to your quote Proverbs 4:7 7 ‘Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding’
When we follow up on this we find the following in Job 28:20-28 ‘Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? … Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.’

The fear of the LORD is wisdom and to depart from evil is understanding. What does it mean to depart from evil and have understanding? Let’s see what scripture has to say about it.

Psalm 111:10 ‘The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments …’

This is what scripture tells us about wisdom: The fear of the LORD is wisdom, to depart from evil is understanding, a good understanding have all they that do his commandments.
According to scripture wisdom is fearing GOD and not doing evil; which the wise understand to be following GOD’s commandments.

In addition for anyone who thinks that their particular brand of ‘wisdom’ is some kind of gift which they need to impart upon others, the bible has advice for them too which is found in Job from chapter 38 onwards. This is where The LORD rebukes those who think to tell others about their ‘wisdom.’

The book of Job starts off where the LORD calls Job ‘a perfect and upright man, one that feared the LORD and eschewed evil.’ We now know that this means that Job followed God’s commandments. And yet GOD allowed Satan to test Job to the max, the only thing Satan was not allowed to do was to take Job’s life. He however took his kids, his wealth, his health. GOD allowed suffering to come upon Job (like He did with His Son) even though Job did all the right things.

In a nutshell, in the last few chapters the LORD told Job’s friends that they’re clueless but Job was rewarded for ‘speaking to the LORD of the thing that is right,’ praying for his friends and suffering without retaliating. This shows us that Job indeed was ‘a perfect and upright man who feared the LORD and eschewed evil.’

Anne, you say that the most important thing for us to do is love GOD .. What is the love of GOD?
1 John 5:3, 2:4, ‘For this is the love of GOD, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.’ He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

I am not interpreting Anne, not adding nor subtracting. I am pointing out where the bible speaks about love and wisdom and understanding.

I know that our views differ Anne and you have yours made known on the subject and I respect yours. I expect that you do the same with my mine, which are based on the prophets and Jesus’ teachings.

      God bless Anne

Dear Anne, I appreciate your opinion and interpretation. Your interpretation is along the lines of what commonly is taught in Christian churches and I am familiar with this interpretation, I have heard it said many times before just like you explain it.

What I am doing here however is not interpreting anything but simply listing where in the bible the words ‘live for ever’ have been mentioned and the context. Who said it, when, where, why and how. That’s all.

And the first time the words ‘live for ever’ appear in the bible is when God took the blessing of eternal life away from both man and woman because they were disobedient. That’s what the scripture quoted tells us Anne, no more and no less.

God said, ‘do as I tell you, or you’ll die.’ Adam and Eve decided to do their own thing. God said, ‘I warned you, game over’ and kicked them out.

That’s what happened according to the scripture verses in the first three chapters of the bible. And that’s all I’m dealing with here on this page; the first time that the words ‘live for ever’ are mentioned in scripture.

Thank you for your thoughts and feedback.

    God bless

    Mimi

    • What do you know about Jesus Christ Mimi and being forgiven of our past sins, after we have heart repentance and than being set free by Jesus so we don’t sin. Do you have the mind of Christ? and are you perfected in Love, these Truths are not what I think but what is confirmed in Scripture.

      Blessings – Anne

Dear Anne, you are interpreting and racing ahead, I am not. You have made your views known, I am aware of them. There is more to come in its own good time.

At the moment I am just stating what scripture says. Not adding to it nor subtracting, nor even interpreting, simply listing where the bible states ‘live for ever.’ I respect your views and expect you to respect mine and the process on my blog. Which is step-by-step, Sola Scriptura.

        God bless

        Mimi
